What is Smartphone Distraction?

Smartphone distraction causes around 30% of road accidents making it statistically more dangerous than drink driving! 

 

At 5Keys Engage we aim to help reduce accidents related to Smartphone distraction by helping Drivers understand physical interactions with their phone whilst Driving with the aim of coaching and rewarding to reduce Smartphone Distraction to zero. 

 

What does 5Keys Engage recognise as a Smartphone Distraction Event?

 

The 5Keys Engage Driver App records each physical interaction with the Smartphone whilst driving as a Distraction Event. For Example: 

 

  • Picking up the phone to answer a call
  • Unlocking the phone or interacting physically with the screen.

 

Is using my phone via handsfree considered a Distraction Event?

 

No, 5Keys Engage does not consider a call that is made using a Hands-Free device as a Distraction event as we recognise that there are occasions when calls whilst driving are an essential part of the business day. 

For the avoidance of doubt, only essential calls will be made to you by the office, therefore provided you are driving hands free and it is safe to do so, you should answer these calls. 

 

However, it is widely acknowledged that talking on the phone whilst driving slows reaction times and reduces our ability to identify hazards so Hands-Free calls should ideally be minimised. 

 

I use my phone to navigate. Is that considered a Distraction Event?

 

The Navigation App itself will not trigger a Distraction Event however interacting with the phone physically whilst moving, for example, to change destination whilst driving will. 

 

The recommendations whilst using your phone for Navigation are: 

  • To ensure that it is clearly mounted to minimise the need to take your eyes off the road. 
  • To set the destination at the beginning of the trip and only make adjustments or cancel the navigation when the vehicle is stationary or alternatively where available make use of voice controls.
