Why does Brightmile need me to accept certain permissions?

Brightmile needs a range of app permissions to operate correctly

What happens when I first sign in?

Follow the step by step onboarding instructions and accept the permissions requested.
The Brightmile app requires the following permissions in order to function correctly:
Android
Permissions (Requested in App onboarding)
  • Location - Brightmile uses GPS data to detect driving trips and understand driving behaviour. This permission needs to be set to always so we can automatically detect trips. We do not use your GPS for anything other than detecting trips when you are driving!
  • Physical Activity - Brightmile uses the accelerometers on your phone to help automatically detect trips and understand driving behaviour.
  • Bluetooth - Brightmile uses nearby vehicle handsfree Bluetooth devices to help detect trips.
  • Notifications/Display over other apps - Brightmile uses 'display over other apps' permissions to use the full screen pop up reminder.
  • Run in the background/Allow background App usage - Brightmile needs to be able to run in the background to automatically detect trips.
  • Set Exact Alarms (Android 14) - Brightmile uses this to support automatically detecting trips.

Settings (phone power management settings)

  • App Auto Start - Brightmile needs to be able to startup when the phone is initially powered on. If this setting is disabled (only applies to some manufacturers)  you will need to open the Brightmile app after a power cycle to start trip detection
  • Pause App Activity if unused  (uncheck) - Brightmile needs to be allowed to run in the background. If this setting is left checked the Brightmile app will be prevented from running unless you open the Brightmile app regularly
  • Exclude from Battery/Power saving modes- Many devices have a power saving mode that will prevent applications including Brightmile from running in the background. Brightmile should either be selected in the exluded app list or use of battery saving/power management modes avoided.

For guidance on manufacturer specific settings please refer to the help guide here

  • Background Location - Brightmile needs access to your location in the background to automatically detect trips and understand your behaviour.
  • Motion Activity - Brightmile uses the accelerometers on your phone to help detect trips and understand driving behaviour.
  • Notifications - Brightmile would like to use notifications to help you have the best experience with Brightmile. We promise to use them sparingly!
Note that rejecting any of these permissions will prevent you from signing up the Brightmile app.
Also note that disabling GPS/High accuracy location at any time will prevent Brightmile from detecting and analysing driving trips.
